If your discharge pipe freezes, or in any way becomes plugged, there is no place for the water to go when the pump runs. The pump is still going to run when the float switch is raised; it is just not pumping any water. This will eventually cause the pump to overheat and shut off. If the problem is not caught soon enough, it would be possible for your basement to flood. If you have a float switch, make sure that it is able to move freely without obstruction. We recommend yearly sump pump checks from a professional contractor to help eliminate these issues.
